Cairns and Palm Cove were once well-kept Australian secrets but today they’re very popular with visitors from all over the world.
The history
Cairns as an area was, of course, well known to the indigenous Australian peoples long before the Europeans arrived. Captain Cook mapped it in the late 18th century but it’s really in the mid-19th century that the area really starts to develop to service the export of minerals and other products of the surrounding land including agricultural goods.
The mid-20th century holiday industry explosion
Although the Cairns and Palm Cove area had some role in the Second World War, it’s really in the immediate post-war years that things change.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the western world discovered the concept of ‘the holiday’ – something that had previously been the preserve of the rich. Wealth was spreading down the social hierarchies that were still prevalent at the time and increasing numbers of people were looking to get away from their normal lives for a few days or weeks each year.
So, the Far North of Queensland started to catch the eye of developers as it had everything – beautiful beaches, rainforest and a tropical climate.
Cairns and Palm Cove accommodation began to be developed to accommodate visitors and tourism in the area received a major boost with the opening of Cairns International Airport in 1984.
The 21st century
Today the area is very popular with both Australian and overseas visitors but you might find that hard to believe as you travel around – particularly in Palm Cove.
Cairns and Palm Cove accommodation continues to have a very ‘escapist’ and discerning holidaymaker feeling to it. Of course, Cairns has expanded over the decades since the 1960s but it still seems fairly homely and somewhere you can get away from it all – particularly if you select one of the more prestigious accommodation establishments.
Palm Cove continues to look like it was discovered only a few weeks back and that’s why it’s very poplar for weddings and romantic breaks.
So, if this sounds like it’s for you, why not let FNQ Apartments help you to find that special Cairns or Palm Cove accommodation?
